This is an exam-based qualification for school leavers who wish to pursue a career in Hairdressing. Once qualified you are able to start work as a first-year stylist in a hairdressing salon.

You will need to have GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and Maths.
Units on the course cover:
• Advising and consulting with clients
• Blow-drying and styling hair
• Colouring and lightening hair
• Cutting ladies' hair
• Health, safety and hygiene
• Setting and dressing hair
• Shampooing, conditioning, and treating the hair and scalp
• Styling hair with electrical equipment
A minimum of 30 hours’ work experience is compulsory for all 16 to 18 year-olds as part of the main programme.
There are many opportunities to participate in enrichment trips to places such as Harry Potter World, Drayton Manor, and Blackpool NCF Hair and Beauty competitions.
Practical elements of the course will be assessed in our state-of-the-art salons on the fifth floor within the college. You will be assessed on a service portfolio (coalition of learner’s work throughout the course). Practical exams make up 50% of the grade for each unit studied. There are two exams that are completed online with the opportunity to retake a second time if required. All exams are marked externally by the awarding body and make up 30% of the grade. A practical synoptic exam equates to 20% of the final grade which will be Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction *.
You can progress on the hairdressing or beauty pathway, or to the Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing. You could also gain employment as a junior stylist in hairdressing salons or become self-employed and set up your own mobile hairdressing business.
