This two-year course is for enthusiastic and highly motivated creatives who want to gain experience in working with high-end, industry-standard graphics packages to develop a broad range of digital media projects. Our iMac suites and professional software will enable you to learn exciting new skills and unlock your potential in order to gain employment within the design industry, work as a freelance or progress to university.
You’ll need four GCSEs at Grade 4/C and above, including English and Maths, and/or you’ll have completed a Level 2 qualification, or equivalent.
This Diploma is delivered through a series of units which may cover the following; design and layout techniques using Adobe packages such as Illustrator and InDesign, animating with After Effects and image manipulation using Photoshop. You will also create 3D models and animate them using Cinema 4D as well as produce interactive web-based applications and design company logos. Work experience forms part of the course, typically by taking on design projects for external clients.
You are encouraged to participate in trips and visits to venues such as the National Media Museum in Bradford, the Design Museum and Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising, both in London. Various graphics-related exhibitions frequently take place throughout the UK and those relevant to this course are considered as part of students’ enrichment. Careers fairs are also popular where students can gain valuable information regarding university choices and apprenticeships.
We set you a challenge. We show you how to do it, work through your ideas and then you produce the work in the form of a project. This includes all your planning and development work, the final designs and some thoughts on how you've done. This is then assessed to either pass, merit or distinction level and then we move on to the next. This pattern is repeated throughout the two years with regular feedback on how you are getting on from your tutors.
You can progress to university and specialise in the fields of animation, graphic design or web design. Or, you might choose employment with a design agency or work individually as a freelance designer.
