Who is this course for?

This course is designed for people wishing to progress in the motor industry, both by acquiring high-level diagnostic skills and by learning the principles of running an automotive workshop.

Entry is through one of two routes. Applicants who have completed a Level 3 programme of study (preferably in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair) and attained a minimum of 120 UCAS points or 48 UCAS tariff points (on the new tariff points system) will be accepted on to the HNC. Alternatively, applicants that do not meet these tariff points but have relevant industry experience will also be considered upon interview.

The course involves some interpretation of numerical data, and assignments are written, so you should preferably have GCSE grade C (grade 5) or above in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in the same. Applicants may also be required to provide academic references.

It spans the advanced area of motor vehicle repair and maintenance and management within this sector. Key subjects covered include:

Vehicle electronics
Vehicle fault diagnosis
Engine design and performance
Customer service
Managing communication and business activities
Planning of vehicle maintenance
Vehicle systems and technology.
There will also be some educational work experience.

Students will need to purchase an Automotive Uniform and some diagnostic equipment.

Each unit is assessed by assignments which are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Having successfully completed this course, you might consider going on to a Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship in Automotive Management and Leadership, or a degree in Automotive Engineering or Automotive Technology.
