Are you interested in Hair, Make-up or Costume? Then step this way! Sandwell College is offering an Extended Diploma in Production Arts, covering Theatrical Hair, Make-up & Costume Design for performers. You will become part of our Performing Arts section, with links to our Hairdressing, Beauty, Art & Design and Fashion teams. You will study units such as Fantasy Hair, Period Hair & Wig Making, Applying Make-up, Special Effects Make-up & Prosthetics, Designing Costumes and Period Costumes for Performance. During the course, you will work with Performing Arts students to create and apply Hair, Make-up & Costume for a variety of performances. The great thing about this course is that you work with all areas of the Creative Industries and build skills to develop a future in Theatrical Hair, Make-up or Design. Our academic staff have worked in the relevant industries and can share their specialist knowledge with you throughout your time at College.
You will need 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (which can include a BTEC Level 2 or equivalent in a relevant subject).
You will study 9-10 modules each year including some of the following:
Production Arts Planning, Production Arts Workshop, Production for Theatre Planning, Historical Context of Performance, Make-up Application for Performers, Special Effects Make-up, Make-up using Prosthetics, Fantasy Hair Designs, Hair Styling & Dressing for Performers, Period Make-up/Hair & Costume, Designing Costume for Performers and Design Drawing Development.
Academic staff are professionals who have worked in the industry can share their subject specialist knowledge with you throughout your time at Sandwell College. The great thing about this course is that you work with all areas of the Creative Industries and build skills to develop a future in Theatrical Hair, Make-up or Design.
Students attend regular trips to Theatres for backstage tours, workshops or to see a live show. You will also attend events such as Clothes Show Live and hair shows and have the opportunity to participate in hair and beauty competitions.
Assessment is in a range of forms including:
Observation through sessions, workshops and performances (classwork, team work and independent study)
Portfolio building and written assignments (theory skills)
Practical activities, workshops and performances (formal assessments).
After successfully completing the BTEC 90 Credit Diploma in their first year, students will progress to year 2 of their course, the BTEC Extended Diploma in Production Arts. Once completed, students can progress on to HE Courses such as HNC/HND or BA Hons Degrees within Hair, Make-up or Design, including Theatre Design and Special Effects Make-up.
