The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development course is structured around a series of units, which are designed to be studied over a two-year period. Each unit covers a specific area of study and is assessed through a combination of coursework and practical assessments. This programme is equivalent to three A Levels.

Some of the units you will study include:

  • Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport

  • Assessing risk in sport
  • Fitness training and programming
  • Sports coaching
  • Sports development
  • Fitness testing for sport and exercise

You will also have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications such as Community Sports Leaders Award and Coaching Awards (FA Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching).

There are many opportunities for you to assist in coaching sports in primary schools, help officiate at championships, and work at other sports events in the area.

The course also gives learners the opportunity to develop a range of techniques, personal skills, and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Various activities and events are organised by the Students’ Union. Within the sports department we organise outdoor adventure activity days, residential trips (with subsidised activities), and college sports teams compete in the Association of Colleges Sport Leagues. You will also have the chance to lead activities in local primary schools and overseas in Goa with disadvantaged children.

Assessment for the BTEC Level 3 Sports Coaching and Development course will take various forms including practical assessment, written coursework and presentations.

There are a variety of options for students who have completed this BTEC in Sports Coaching and Development. Some possible next steps include:

  • Further education: students may choose to continue their education by enrolling in a related degree programme such as sports science, sports coaching, sport and exercise science, sports therapy or physical education.
  • Professional qualifications: students may choose to pursue professional qualifications in areas such as sports coaching, personal training, or strength and conditioning.
  • Apprenticeships: students may choose to pursue an apprenticeship in a related field, such as sports coaching or personal training.

Once students have completed their BTEC Level 3, we offer:

- A Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching validated by the University of Wolverhampton, which includes a coaching pathway that provides students with the knowledge and skills required to work as sports coaches.

- The Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship: a vocational training programme that provides individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to work as a community coach. This apprenticeship is designed for individuals who are interested in coaching and developing sports programmes in their communities. The programme typically takes 12 to 18 months to complete and combines on-the-job training with structured learning. During the apprenticeship, individuals will work in a coaching role, gaining practical experience and developing the skills needed to be successful in the field.

The apprenticeship covers topics such as:

  • Planning and delivering community coaching sessions
  • Understanding the needs of different participants in a coaching context
  • Understanding health and safety in sports and coaching
  • Understanding the principles of child protection in sport
  • Understanding how to provide effective feedback to participants

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, individuals will receive a Level 2 Community Activator Coach certificate and will have the skills and knowledge needed to work as a community coach. This apprenticeship is a stepping stone to further coaching qualifications and careers in the sports industry.
