Course summary

This BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport Industry Skills - Leading Children's Sports Activities is a one-year course for anyone who would like to pursue a career in sport, or for students who have already completed a Foundation Level course. It is designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications and gives full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or to progress to college vocational qualifications. The course also gives learners the chance to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Course requirements

You’ll need GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above, a BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma, or Level 1 City & Guilds NVQ in a related area. You’ll also need to come in for a chat about the course. A criminal records check is needed for you to attend school placements.

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport Industry Skills - Leading Children's Sports Activities consists of a combination of the following units:

  • Fitness testing and training
  • Practical sport
  • Planning and leading sports activities
  • Anatomy for sport
  • Exercise and fitness instruction
  • Lifestyle and the sports performer
  • Injury in sport

Students will also have the opportunity to acquire additional qualifications including the Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA) and Functional Skills in Communications and IT. There will be opportunities for you to assist in coaching sessions in primary schools, help officiate at championships, and work at other sports events within the area.

Various activities and events are organised by the Students’ Union. Within the sports department we organise outdoor adventure activity days and residential trips (with subsidised activities), and college sports teams compete in the Association of Colleges Sport Leagues. You will also have the chance to lead activities in local primary schools.

Assessment for this BTEC Level 2 Sport Industry Skills - Leading Children's Sports Activities qualification will take various forms including practical assessment, written coursework and presentations.

Successful students of this BTEC Level 2 Sport Industry Skills course can progress to one of the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diplomas in Sport. Alternatively, they may seek employment within the sports sector at a junior level in a range of roles, including recreation assistant or sports leader.
