Just studying A Levels is not the only way into university and the career of your choice. Sandwell College offers you the option of studying an A Level alongside a more practical and career-focused Level 3 Diploma (the same level of qualification as A Levels). This is the right option for you if you want to go to university, you know what sort of career you will be interested in, and you don’t want the demands of studying three A Levels. It’s important that the A Level you choose supports or complements the Applied Science Diploma, so we offer a structured ‘pathway’ that makes sure the two elements match each other but still gives you a broad choice of subjects.
You would need to gain five GCSEs including grades C or above (grades 5 or above) in English, Maths and Science.
The Level 3 Applied Science Diploma is designed to provide specialist, work-related programmes of study that cover the key knowledge and practical skills required in the science sector. It provides an excellent route to employment in the science industry or within organisations that make use of science.
In the first year, you will study:
• Fundamentals of science
• Working in the science industry
• Scientific practical techniques
• Perceptions of science
• Using mathematical tools in science
• Using statistics in science
• Chemical laboratory techniques.
In the second year, you will study:
• Scientific investigations
• Using science in the workplace
• Biochemistry and biochemical techniques
• Genetics and genetic engineering
• Practical chemical analysis
• Medical physics techniques.
Your diploma work will be assessed entirely by assignments and assessed practicals. Your A Level will be assessed by examination.
Students should be aiming to progress on to one of the many different types of degrees dealing with the applications of science and medicine.
