Remmel to play for England Colleges
Sandwell College sports student Remmel Johnson is really on top of his game after scoring a place in the national football team.
The 18-year-old right midfielder has been selected for the England Colleges team’s final squad of 22 following success in three rigorous sets of trials.
Remmel, who also plays for Handsworth United, is no stranger to representing his country. Last Easter he spent a month in Jamaica representing the under 20 Jamaican football team in the World Cup.
Former North Birmingham Academy pupil Remmel lives in Handsworth and plans to become a teacher when he finishes his studies.
He has also been selected as a college sporting champion during the year of the Olympics, when he will lead coaching sessions and promote sport across the borough.
His delighted tutors say they are extremely proud of Remmel’s success.
Sport team leader Stacey Boreham said: “This is a remarkable achievement and the first time ever the college has had a representative player in the final squad of 22. “This shows how important it is for us to provide opportunities to help our students develop their sporting talent. “We wish Remmel every success in the national squad.”
Meanwhile female footballers Raegan Roper, aged 17, and Emma Morgan, 16, both from Tipton, have scored their own success by winning places on the West Midlands regional team.
Raegan, Emma and Remmel are all currently studying for their BTEC Level 3 Sport qualifications at Sandwell College.
England Colleges Football is the official national team for Further Education college players, run in partnership by British Colleges Sport and The Football Association.
Selected players follow a programme similar to that of the FA’s England Youth national teams. Scouts from professional clubs, US universities and England women’s team also regularly attend England College Football fixtures, providing a great platform for players who impress to progress further in football.
The England Colleges team’s first game will be against Australia Schools Football on January 31, followed by a Welsh Colleges Anglo-Welsh Shield match on March 23.
The new Sandwell College, due to open in West Bromwich in the Spring, will feature a four-court sports hall, multi gym and fitness suite for budding players to hone their skills. For more information on sports courses at Sandwell College call 0800 622 006 or click here.
