Who is this course for?

The BTEC First Diploma is an ideal programme for school leavers. This one-year full-time course is designed to encourage you to develop your creative personal skills and qualities you need for work, learning and to help you achieve your full potential. The course is a practical and creative programme and will give you an introduction to a career in fashion, clothing and textiles.

Formal Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grade D and above, including English, or successful completion of Level 1 Diploma or equivalent.

What does the course involve?

You will study many aspects of fashion and textiles including: Experimenting with 2D and 3D Communication, Learning about Artists and Fashion Designers, Working to a Fashion Design Brief and Designing your Own Fashion Collections, Working to a Textile Brief and Producing Visually Exciting Textiles, and Producing your Final Major Project, which will be showcased in the college Fashion Show. Functional skills units at an appropriate level will also form an integral part of the course.

Enrichment activities

Students are taken to The Clothes Show Live at Birmingham NEC every year and are also involved in Sandwell College’s Fashion Show in the summer of each academic year. Students have opportunities to see professional performances in the West End as well as locally alongside performing arts students.

How will I be assessed?

The units are assessed through exciting and creative project and assignment work. There are no external examinations. Each core unit and specialist unit is graded pass, merit or distinction and an overall grade is awarded on successful completion of the course. Functional skills form an integral part of the programme and are assessed through a combination of coursework/portfolio work or external examination. Your progress on the course will be regularly reviewed through individual tutorials.
