Entry Level

Who is this course for?

The What Next? course is designed for 14-18 year-olds who wish to move into employment, academic or vocational education but lack the qualifications and skills to gain access to their chosen career. The course is a one year full-time for post-16 learners and up to two years full or part time for pre-16 learners.

Formal Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but all applicants are required to attend an interview and undertake an initial assessment of their English and Maths before being accepted on the course. You will need to be:
  • enthusiastic
  • willing and ready to learn
  • well-motivated
  • a good time-keeper and have excellent attendance
  • well-organised.

What does the course involve?

The course gives the opportunity to gain nationally-recognised qualifications as it concentrates on developing learners' functional skills in English and Maths at Entry 2 up to Level 1 by following the Edexcel Functional Skills courses. There is also the opportunity to develop life skills via subjects such as, Employability Skills and Personal and Social Development.

Students receive support in identifying and developing career and vocational interests and may be offered opportunities for work experience.

Enrichment activities

Learners will have the opportunity to take part in various activities such as educational trips and visits, guest speakers and charity fundraising.

How will I be assessed?

A range of assessments including practical, written, computerised, online, oral, coursework, and portfolios.

Where can I go next?

While on the What Next course, learners can improve their grades, achieving Entry Level and Level One qualifications which then enable them to progress to mainstream programmes and employment.

Many of our learners move on to Computing, Business and Games Design, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating, Tiling, Plastering, Plumbing, and Automotive Body and Repair.
